BERES – Dr. Chester J., 52, Richland Township, beloved son, husband, father and physician, departed his earthly home and entered into his eternal home on Oct. 29, 2007. Chet was born on May 10, 1955, in Altoona, to Chester and Phyllis (McCool) Beres of Lilly. Preceded in death by his father, maternal grandparents and paternal grandparents. He is survived by his loving family: wife, former Dorothy Hammond, whom he married on June 28, 1980; his three children, Christopher, Lauren and Matthew, all who are attending college; his mother; mother- and father-in-law, Helen and Bernard Hammond, Cresson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bernie and Joan Hammond, Rochester, N.Y.; Tom Hammond, Hollidaysburg; Helen and Chris Beyer, Littleton, Colo.; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Chet was a 1973 graduate of Penn Cambria High School; 1978 graduate of UPJ; and a 1982 graduate of University of Pittsburgh Medical School. In 1985, he completed family practice residency at Roanoke Memorial Hospitals, Va.; board certified in family practice and practiced medicine at North Roanoke Family Physicians until moving to Johnstown in June 1989. He was employed in Johnstown by Mercy Hospital and Highland Independent Physicians Association; UPMC Lee Regional Care Centers; currently Beres Family Medicine, part of Alleghenies Independent Physicians. He is a former staff physician at Roanoke Memorial Hospitals; Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley; Friendship Manor Nursing Home; geriatric coordinator, Roanoke Memorial Hospitals; employee health physician, UPMC Lee Regional Hospital; chairman of department of family practice, UPMC Lee Regional Hospital; and president of medical staff, UPMC Lee Regional Hospital. He was currently on the staff of Laurel Crest Manor Nursing Home; Laurel View Village Nursing Home; UPMC Lee Regional Hospital; Conemaugh Hospital; Good Samaritan Hospital; medical director of UPMC Lee Regional Hospice and currently Conemaugh Regional Hospice since 1995; Arbutus Park Manor; occupational medicine, UPJ; sports medicine, UPJ; and Area Agency on Aging “Options” physician consultant. Chet coached VE Little League Baseball, Johnstown City Pony and Colt League Baseball and St. Benedict Pee Wee football and girls basketball. Member of the St. Benedict Athletic Association, where he received the Service Excellence Award. He was an avid Bishop McCort sports fan, where he was a team physician for Crusher Football and donated his time to do physicals for Bishop McCort and St. Benedict schools. Besides his passion and love for his family and medicine, he was an avid golfer at Windber Country Club. A member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Geistown, where funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland, where vigil for the deceased will be held. Committal will be held at Richland Cemetery.
